Barbara McDermott is currently Emeritus Professor of Cardiovascular Pharmacology at Queen’s University Belfast and has carried out research there and been a teacher for about 30 years. Specializing in oxidative stress in the heart, research interests include the role of peptide mediators in diabetes and heart failure, ischaemic mechanisms and cardioprotection, and anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy. She also undertook a five-year appointment as Director of the QUB Centre for Cardiovascular Research and then set up the Gender Equality Office. Barbara has been a BPS member since the late 1980s and has supported the Society by attending many of its scientific meetings along with her postgraduate students and research fellows. She joined the BPS Meetings Committee in 2013 and then undertook a term as Meetings Vice-President, Member of Council and of Finance Committee. She also undertakes editorial work as a member of the Reviews Sub-Committee of the British Journal of Pharmacology.
